Lavender graduation is a historical ceremony that honors LGBTQ+ students for their academic achievements. The Lavender Graduation Ceremony was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo who identified as a Jewish lesbian. Dr. Sanlo was denied the opportunity to attend the graduation of her children because of her identity. She then felt what her students had experienced because they too were sometimes denied the abiliy to celebrate graduation on the basis of gender and sexual orientation. To support students, she worked to develop the Lavender Graduation to recognize the achievements of LGBTQ+ students, and ensure that they had a safe space to celebrate their hard work. The graduation stands as a reminder that regardless of identity--everyone deserves the right to have their achievements recognized. If you are interested in participating in the ceremony, please contact Dakota Miller at dakotamiller@umsl.edu.
